The woman asking the question was accused of “not relying on God.” After a few seconds, Piper takes a sip from a water bottle.
Sure, medicine back then is a lot different from now.
It says in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. The word “flesh” in Romans 7:5 is not synonymous with the word “body,” but rather with the phrase “our sinful nature/tendencies.”.Their bodies existed before the Fall, showing us how the body itself is not the root of our sins. When God created Adam and Eve, they were given physical bodies.“For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death” (Romans 7:5). They would point to verses like Genesis 6:12 and Romans 7:5 to back their belief. Therefore, Christians should despise their evil bodies. Dualists believe that everything that comes from the body is evil and everything from the soul leads to redemption. Dualism is a heresy claiming that the human existence can be divided into two parts: the body and the soul. But chances are you or someone from your church believes in dualism. Perhaps you have never heard of this term. There are two main misconceptions I would like to identify that Christians often have about our physical bodies. For clarity purpose, I will use soul to describe the part of us that was dead in sin but made alive in Christ.
* Depending on your church background, the words spirit and soul may indicate the same aspect or not. To live a life that honors Christ to the fullest, I believe we should reorient to have a more wholistic view of ourselves as created beings. However, we are created by God with a body, a mind, and a soul. Behind this whole thought process, the body and the mind are often an afterthought. Are their souls saved? If yes, they are a Christian. When distinguishing whether someone has faith or not, we often think about the state of the soul.
